Fresh out of Teachers College, I had an interview and was offered the job.
The teaching position was in Manitoba on a fly-in only community;
I live in Toronto, Ontario.
I packed my bags and off I went to start my teaching career.
Equipped with flexibility, a caring nature, lots of enthusiasm
and all I learned from Teachers College, I thought teaching would easy!

My wonderful First Nations students became my teachers.
Without a connection,
I was just a stranger to my students and so they did not care to learn.
Without classroom management,
my students did not know what the expectations were
and did whatever they wanted.
Without structure,
the students did not know how to navigate the classroom.
I learned how to connect well, be clear with expectations and organize my class.

I have had more than my share of hostile and violent classrooms.
However, the lesson that my first students gave me always made the difference.

I was able to walk into classrooms
(even hostile and violent ones) and have an instant positive impact.
I have taught teachers how to do this and now their classes run like clockwork.
In Canada, many teachers are leaving the profession.
Many teachers are still struggling to create a learning environment
where they and their students excel.

Whether I am coaching, consulting, training, leading a workshop, speaking or any
combination of these, the educators experience a dynamic transformation.
This transformation directly impacts their view and way of teaching.
It drives the lasting change our education system needs to support every student.
